[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
Hi, everyone.
Long time no see. Welcome Back to our HSK2 podcast, Melanie. Today I'm with our good friend Vicky, Vicky.
[00:00:28] Speaker B: Nihau. Melanie.
[00:00:50] Speaker A: What about the weather?
[00:00:57] Speaker B: It's pretty good.
Every day is a sunny day.
[00:01:07] Speaker A: Wow. I'm a jealous.
Literally, where I live, it rains a lot.
[00:01:21] Speaker B: Oh, well, what can I say?
[00:01:35] Speaker A: Who likes rainy day?
[00:01:45] Speaker B: My first really likes rainy, rainy days.
[00:01:54] Speaker A: We can't be friends.
[00:01:56] Speaker B: Definitely. No, definitely.
[00:02:03] Speaker A: So what we. What we were learning today, what we will learn today?
[00:02:09] Speaker B: Well, today we're gonna learn three useful verbs. The verb land.
And they all involve asking, telling, or letting someone to do something.
[00:02:23] Speaker A: Oh, interesting. So these verbs are everywhere in daily life. In family, at school, at work.
And mastering them will make you sound much more natural.
[00:02:40] Speaker B: Yes. And for the cultural segment, we're gonna talk about the after school and weekend routines that Chinese students have, which is like very different compared to Western students. So stay tuned.
[00:03:00] Speaker A: Yeah. Welcome. Okay, so before we start, Womankai Shi Zhiqian. You're listening to the Hanyu Chinese School podcast.

Okay, at the very beginning, we will start our dialogue. The setting of the dialogue is Melanie and Vicky meeting on the street.
I'll start.
[00:05:01] Speaker B: Laoshi.
Yes.
Very busy.
[00:05:09] Speaker A: Yeah. What a busy day.
[00:05:12] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:14] Speaker A: Okay, let's start.
So the grammar today we use in the dialogue X2 is to use.
And so all three red verbs are used to make someone do something, but they differ in tone and politeness.
First one means to let to Allah or to make someone do something.
In the dialogue we have this sentence.
Tao lun gonker, my teacher let me go see him to discuss homework. So the tone is neutral. Casual can imply allowing or causing. The structure is subject, someone, verb, object.
[00:06:16] Speaker B: Let's see some extra examples.
My dad let me eat dinner first.
She let me drive to the supermarket.
[00:06:36] Speaker A: Yes.
Okay, let's move on.
Okay, so there are some advanced information.
Can also express emotional influence.
For example, this makes me very happy. So here means make, make the thing makes me blah, blah, adjective. So the structure is subject plus someone plus verb plus object or subject plus jean plus someone plus Adjective.
[00:07:19] Speaker B: Yeah, you're right. So now let's move on to the word which is to politely ask or invite someone to do something.
So from the dialogue we have this example.
My mom asked me politely to buy groceries. So the tone here is like polite, formal, shows respect or courtesy. So the structure is subject plus qing plus someone plus verb plus object.
[00:07:57] Speaker A: Yeah, the structure can be a bit long. So let us see more examples. First one, Laoshi, qi, xiong, hui, da, wen, ti a were very polite. So the teacher asked politely the student to answer the question.
And I asked politely my friend to take a photo for me. So please note here is preferred in formal situations or with people you respect.
It is always softer than.
[00:08:37] Speaker B: Yeah. So let's move on to which is to tell or order or instruct. So from the dialogue we have this example.
Mom told us to come home for dinner at 6pm so the tone is stronger. Like giving an order can be informal or casual depending on the context. And the structure is subject, someone, verb, object.
[00:09:20] Speaker A: Okay, let us see more examples.
The boss told me to work overtime tomorrow. So here we translate to to tell. To tell, to tell. It sounds more formal.
And he told me not to be late.
[00:09:52] Speaker B: Yes. So let's compare the politeness between ran and Jiao. First of all, Qin is like the most polite, formal and respectful from the three of them.
Then it's like more neutral, casual for everyday stuff. And then you have which is more like an order. Sometimes it's forceful.
[00:10:21] Speaker A: Very good. So those three verbs are quite similar and please pay attention how to differ them.
Okay, now it's your turn.
How would you say this in Chinese?
My mom told me to go do my Chinese homework.
[00:10:45] Speaker B: Yes. Think about the correct structure and leave us your answers in the comments below.
[00:10:56] Speaker A: Yes. And we will review your sentences and give corrections if needed. So have a try.
Okay, now let's move back to our dialogue and please pay attention to the grammar and.
Vicky.
Vicky, where are you going?
[00:11:35] Speaker B: I'm going to the market. My mom asked me to buy groceries. She's going to make tonight's dinner.
[00:11:48] Speaker A: And your dad, Isn't he going with you?
[00:12:03] Speaker B: My dad is working, but my mom told him to come home at 6 for dinner.
[00:12:18] Speaker A: Oh, I see.
Why are you still carrying your school books in your hand?
[00:12:33] Speaker B: Because my teacher also asked me to go see him to discuss homework.
[00:12:51] Speaker A: Wow, you're really busy today. So are you going to buy groceries first or see a teacher first?
[00:13:04] Speaker B: I'll go buy grocery first and then I'll go see my teacher.
[00:13:12] Speaker A: Thank you for your hard work.
[00:13:16] Speaker B: Thank you.

[00:14:52] Speaker A: Welcome everyone.
Okay, now we're gonna talk about the grammar.
Sorry, the culture.
[00:15:08] Speaker B: Yeah, Today topic is about what Chinese students do during weekends and after school activities.
Like many western people might not know this, but Chinese students are often studying like very like really long hours. And after school they frequently attend tutoring or extra curriculum, cooler classes.
[00:15:40] Speaker A: Yes, that's true.
Chinese students learn very long time.
Okay, so for example, elementary and middle school students might study English, Ying Yu, math, or even piano after school Monday to Friday.
[00:16:10] Speaker B: And on the weekends, their schedule doesn't get much lighter. Besides extra classes, some students attend sports training or spend hours in the library reviewing homework.
[00:16:25] Speaker A: Wow.
So even during the weekends they're still busy.
[00:16:32] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:16:34] Speaker A: Yeah, that's a thing. Right. They have no time to play, to hang out.
[00:16:39] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:16:44] Speaker A: But not all activities are focused on academics. Schools often organize clubs like dance, calligraphy or robotics.
So students can develop hobbies and interests.
[00:17:03] Speaker B: Yes, the combination of studying and activities isn't just about grades. It also teach them self disciplines, time management, responsibility from a very young age.
[00:17:22] Speaker A: And another interesting point is even on weekends, many students have homework.
Yeah, from a parent.
Like writing journals, practicing reading comprehension or helping with household chores.
[00:17:39] Speaker B: Yeah, but this structure also helps them well for adulthood. Like many others says that growing this way helps them build patience and a very strong sense of responsibility.
[00:17:55] Speaker A: That's true. So in short, after school life and weekend routines are both challenging and fulfilling for Chinese students.
[00:18:06] Speaker B: Yeah, that's so true. But they also, it really helps them to grow well and understand that discipline is very important for their life.
Right?
[00:18:19] Speaker A: Exactly. Yeah, exactly. So all those things are Meaningful, but are also very challenging.
[00:18:28] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. We have a word that in Chinese, which is it is worth. Well, it. It worth it. Yeah.
[00:18:37] Speaker A: Right?
Yeah, it's worth it.
[00:18:41] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:18:44] Speaker A: Okay, so do you remember our questions earlier? We asked, how would you say my mom told me to go do my Chinese homework in Chinese?
[00:18:58] Speaker B: So the correct answer is.
[00:19:09] Speaker A: Very good if you did it correctly. If not, don't be upset. You can keep practicing. And please remember, using ask directly is more casual. Well, please ask politely is sounds more formal or courteous, especially with teachers or in official contexts.
[00:19:36] Speaker B: Yep.
So now it's your turn.
Try to think a sentence using or.
[00:19:48] Speaker A: Yeah. So please leave your answers in the comments below. We will review them and give corrections if needed. So everybody have a try.
